Achievements

We are very proud to have had such talent in our society. With that, we would like to show off how great our previous students were so much so that their pieces were published in the papers.

Rain and I
They say "make the best out of everything life gives you."
But who makes the best out of a heavy downpour?
So heavy, innocent children fear the loud meet of lightnings above their once blue skies.
So loud, it frightens a dog who has no clue to the norm of mother nature.
The wind so strong, it detaches leaves off branches they once grew from.
It seems that everyone has the same perspective of the dark, gloomy, heavy rain.
But, I guess there are different kinds of people.
You see, when you've had your share of attacks from life that caused injuries on the inside, and you decide you want to be your own remedy, it changes everything.
At least, it does for me.
And as I sit outside my porch, with a notebook of scribbles from perfecting this piece,
With hot coffee in a 'latte' printed mug, and my dog beside me guessing he feels safe around me
I made the best out of this scary, heavy, cold rain. I had an insight to this piece, and an insight to me.
Because I make the best of what life has to offer me.
You can too, it all depends on how you see it.

Broken people are so beautiful
Whether they're torn inside or out
They keep their thoughts to themselves
They will never scream them aloud.

Broken people know nobody really cares
They observe and see things around them
They have stopped expecting anything from anyone
That was the first lesson to be learnt.

Broken people are good liars
Liars with a big heart
Smiles plastered on their faces
While their demons inside tore them apart.

Our Vision & Mission

To be a platform that raises the importance of the English language that will lead to a successful future.

To extend and promote the use of the English language via discussions, debates as well as other useful activities. To also ensure that there will be an improvement of the language before the student embarks on his career.

About Us

The English Language Society aims to produce students who will be well spoken in the English Language. We will focus on current affairs and issues that can be related to the students, and engage in various discussions and analysis together as a whole to ensure that everyone is involved. A variety of activities outside the classroom such as charity events and day trips to museum and other places will also be a part of our society because we believe in learning beyond classrooms.

Our Super Fun Weekly Activities!

Essay Writing

As a proud English society, we have regular writing activities on a weekly basis. This is because we want our students to improve their English language as it is very important in the near future.Don't you worry! Our writing activities are really fun as we would write on really interesting topics that we can all relate to.

Story Telling

You must be thinking, "But story telling are for babies." Do not be mistaken. Story telling is not as easy as it seems. Apart from just memorizing words off a piece of paper, you must also learn how to capture your audience's attention and how are you going to do that? Well, every other week, we are going to teach you how! That way, not only you can improve your presentation skills but also your social skills!

Movie marathons

When it comes to the English Language Society, we emphasize friends, students and members to watch more English  movies. The 2-hour movie marathon is one of our weekly activities. We encourage our members to come together to watch more English educational movies as well. Movies like Won't Back Down directed by Daniel Barnz is one example of an inspiring movie that we play. This movie gives a mission to fix the society's broken school just to ensure a bright future for the children. There many moral values which definitely motivate the audience. There would be at least two movies in a month as an entertainment and learning purpose for the English Language Society. We also believe that most of our members and friends from this society will definitely gain something than nothing based on activities like this!

Games and Pop Quiz

The English Language Society do have weekly quiz and games. The purpose of having quizzes in our society is a test of knowledge and thinking skills as in a form of competition between individuals or teams. Crossword puzzles and scramble words are examples of games that would trigger our mind as well as helps in the boost of the language. When it comes to the English Language Society, we don't only emphasize our friends and members in studying but we do emphasize them to join and be active in games. Charades and limbo are the two most favorite and popular games in our English Language Society!

Practices for the upcoming drama competition

The English Language Society practices at least an hour on their drama act and role-play weekly towards the competition. The purpose of having practices is to help students to develop their non-human characters in an act. Miss Jaslind who is charge of this will be guiding each and every students to improve their acting skills and talents well. With every practices, hard work and effort, our students will give their best by putting in their heart and soul into it in order to succeed in the competitions. The credits goes to Miss Jaslind as well for being an amazing lecturer by guiding us towards the end throughout this tough journey!

Things To Look Forward To

We believe that students would be more willing to learn if the activities were held outside. Therefore we have decided that to bring our students on a road trip! Where do you think we have decided to bring you guys?

Do these images look familiar to you? Yes, you’re right! We are going on a road trip to Singapore! First off, we want this trip to be educational for the students because it can’t always be fun and no work. Therefore, we have not only decided to bring you guys to the second Universal Studios theme park to open in Asia but also to places that provide students with general knowledge.

1.   Universal Studios Singapore

When you get to the top, you feel tingly everywhere then suddenly, you speed down except for your stomach since it always seems to be left behind! Yes! I’m talking about the roller coasters! I’m so excited!

2.  Singapore Science and Art Museum

ArtScience Museum is one of a must-visit places at Marina Bay Sands. It is an integrated resort in Singapore owned by the US Las Vegas Sands company. Did you know it is the world's first ArtScience museum?!

3. Ion Sky

Placed on the 55th floor of Orchard Ion, this park promises a bird eyes view of wondrous Singapore

Do you think this is the end? No! Of course not! There will be more places we will visit but we shall keep that a surprise ;)

Testimonies

"I was not sure if I had made the right choice when I joined the English Language Society, as my English was poor. But then, the warm welcome I received from the members made me feel comfortable and at ease. I was always so insecure about the way I sounded ever since I had gotten braces but after joining ELS, I slowly began to learn how to be speak confidently in front of class, to voice out my opinions and be happy with my flaws. They did not criticize about how bad my English was. Instead, they were patient with me and they never gave up. The activities they planned for us were so fun and thanks to them, I made so many friends. I no longer fear to present in front of a group of people. With that, I definitely do not regret my choice of joining the English Language Society."

                                                                                             - Hans Cartwright (26, class of 2008)

"I thought it would be boring because I had this mindset like, "Hey, I mean, it's just going to be like some extra class about English, but only with no teachers right?" To my surprise, ELS ended up having tons of fun activities prepared for us. ELS was not just about the English language but
being in it exposed me to so many new things. There were debates once every few months and to be honest, it was really refreshing. I hadn't had a good debate in months during that time. It felt so good to just voice out my opinions. There were also events that opened our eyes to the beauty of the English language. It taught me how to interact with people, to voice out and listen to other people's opinion and learn that there is so much more than just my point of view. If I was given the same choice again to choose between the English Language Society or some other club, I wouldn't even
hesitate to choose ELS."

                                                             - Michael White (23, class of 2011)

"There was never a meeting that was boring, I can assure you. The environment in the club was always lively and the best part was that I never felt isolated in the club. In school, I was always labelled the geek, the nerd, the usual. Just when I thought ELS was going to treat me the same way, things really turn out for the better. The members made me feel useful and loved. Yes, loved. They were like my second family. Everyone in the society were very friendly and kind. If there was something that I couldn't talk to my parents about, they were always there for me. They might have not given the best advice, but they comforted me when I needed them and their support was never ending. From this, I learned that no one can read minds. If I don't speak out, no one will know what I'm thinking and if I continued on this path of always being silent, I will never move forward. With that, I thank the people in ELS for making me a better person."

                                              - Bryce Brown (30, class of 2002)
